Red Sand Art Glass

Carolyn Cross has been working with glass since her first painting class in Myrtle Beach at the beginning of 2021. She painted her corgi, Toby, and never looked back.

Carolyn's keen interest in glass as a medium began on a family holiday when she bought a glass inukshuk as a souvenir. Blue and frosted, the piece took root in her imagination. Today, she finds joy and fulfillment as she works on her glass creations, which celebrate the natural world and the vivid, bright colors she loves, from red Prince Edward Island sand to leaves and flowers designed into her glass. She also finds inspiration in the people-powered community of the Island, which has been supportive and friendly since she first began visiting 20 years ago.

Her favourite part of making glass art? Opening the kiln in the morning. "It's like Christmas morning," she says. As a glass artist, she spends the day crafting her work using Prince Edward Island sand and other natural colors and artifacts before letting her 100% solar-powered kiln do its work.

Browse Carolyn's art and let it call to mind the natural world we share, celebrated so vividly and poignantly during one's time on PEI. "I hope you enjoy the colors that are put together in the piece, and I hope it reminds you of where you got it from," she said.
